The measurement of left ventricular blood pressure and volume in real time allows researchers to comprehensively assess cardiovascular function. When pressure and volume signals are mapped against each other Pressure-Volume (PV) Loops are created with the ability to quantify cardiac function independent of loading conditions. Key parameters that result are myocardial contractility, compliance, muscle energetics and other quantitative measures of cardiac function while typical applications for PV loops include heart failure studies, gene therapy and safety/toxicology studies.
