For most of her life in rural Tanzania, Grace Mwaura spoke only Swahili. While the missionary school she went to taught English as a subject, she rarely had much use for the language taught in school, till she decided to pursue her degree at a University in South Africa. “Initially I was very embarrassed and felt upset about not being able to communicate correctly with my professors and classmates. Slowly I began to make an effort and then I realised that English is an easier language to master than I thought. Today, I think, I use English more than Swahili even for my day-to-day usage”, says a proud Mwaura.
